Humpback whale watching stands out among many of the wonderful natural experiences that can be enjoyed in this part of the country. Every year, between July and October, more than 3,000 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) arrive in the warm waters of the Pacific coast of Valle del Cauca to begin their reproductive stage after having traveled about 8,500 kilometers from the distant Antarctica and southern Chile. This has made Colombia a key destination for the migration of these majestic marine creatures.
During their stay off the Colombian coast, humpback whales mate, gestate and give birth to their calves. It is one of the most important events in the region and attracts tourists from all over the world to Buenaventura, Nuquí and other areas of the Colombian Pacific.
This cetacean is known for its imposing size, at birth they measure between 4 and 5 meters, and in their adult stage they can measure up to 16 meters and weigh around 40 tons. Humpback whale song is one of their most distinctive aspects, used both to communicate and to attract potential mates during the breeding season. In addition, their ability to jump out of the water is a commonly observed behavior during sightings, which adds a spectacular element to the experience.
The migratory route of humpback whales begins in the cold waters of the southern part of the planet and ends in the warm waters of the Colombian Pacific. The most recognized areas to observe this migration include the National Natural Park Uramba Bahía Málaga, Juanchaco, Ladrilleros and La Barra. Whales can also be seen in Buenaventura.
The Uramba Bahía Málaga National Natural Park is one of the most outstanding sites for humpback whale watching in Colombia. In addition to bird watching, visitors can enjoy activities such as kayaking through mangroves and exploring natural pools.
Just an hour and a half from Buenaventura, these beaches are ideal to enjoy the whale watching season. Its privileged location allows the observation of humpback whales in their natural environment. These beaches are a tour of nature and culture in the Colombian Pacific.
Three hours from Cali, this beach near Juanchaco and Ladrilleros offers an additional opportunity for whale watching. The area has a varied tourist offer that attracts visitors interested in learning about marine fauna.
The humpback whale season is crucial to the local economy and is a major driver of tourism in the region. However, this is a process that is fundamental for the conservation of the species, which is why these areas are extremely protected and where responsible and respectful ecotourism must be carried out.
Understanding why humpback whales migrate, their diet, physical characteristics and migratory routes allows a better appreciation of their ecological importance. For this reason, respect for their habitat and the preservation of the species is promoted.
Humpback whale watching in Colombia not only offers a unique experience for visitors, but also plays a crucial role in raising awareness about marine conservation and the importance of protecting these magnificent animals and their environment for future generations.
