Located between the municipalities of Buga, Yotoco and Guacarí, on the right bank of the Cauca River, Laguna de Sonso is one of the most important wetlands in southwestern Colombia. It is the last great remnant of the lagoon ecosystem in the Valle and a wildlife refuge that invites you to rest, contemplation and connection with nature. If you are looking for a different plan, with purpose and outdoors, this natural corner is waiting for you.
Laguna de Sonso has been recognized as a natural reserve thanks to its ecological richness. It is home to more than 200 species of birds, including migratory and endemic species, making it an outstanding destination for birdwatching in Colombia. In addition, its environment supports traditional practices such as artisanal fishing, carried out by local communities, and encourages community tourism and environmental education initiatives.
The main access is on the road that connects Buga with Mediacanoa. Approximately 250 meters before crossing the Cauca River, a detour leads directly to the wetland. It is also possible to get there from Yotoco or from the village of Guacas, in Guacarí, through rural roads. There is no entrance fee to the protected area, and it is recommended to visit the Ciénaga Vulture Environmental Center, which serves as an information and coordination point for guided tours.
The visit can last between half a day or a full day, depending on the plan you choose. These are some not-to-be-missed experiences:
The ecological trails allow you to walk through the native vegetation while listening to the songs of the birds. With a local guide, you will be able to identify them and learn about their behavior and their role in the ecosystem.
Some routes include boat rides through the wetland’s canals, where local fishermen still practice artisanal fishing.
The contrast between the water, the vegetation and the light of dawn or dusk makes the lagoon a paradise for photography lovers.
The Centro Ambiental Buitre de Ciénaga is also a space for workshops, talks and educational activities. It is ideal for schools, groups or families interested in learning about sustainability and the environment.
The lagoon is open to the public daily between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Admission is free, although it is recommended to hire local guides for a more enriching experience. Bring cool clothes, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a good dose of curiosity.
